Direct SIP call

maybe I don't understand the concept of Direct SIP call completely so excuse if the question sounds stupid:

I have two 3CX systems at two different locations. Is there a way that people can place Direct SIP calls between these two systems without involving a SIP trunk provider in between?

If so I am not clear how to make it work. In specific I am not clear how to place a direct SIP call for example on a Grandstream GXP21xx phone.
