Direct SIP to Remote Extensions

I'm pretty new to the VoIP/SIP world and have a question.
If I want to connect old SIP phones (no STUN feature) as remote extensions to a cloud-hosted 3CX server I can only do that as Direct SIP connection? It's mandatory to use an SBC in that situation?
I kind of lost on all possibilities available. Thanks to all of you guys!

If it is an unsupported phone - you are best to try using an SBC.
You MIGHT be able to get it to work as a Direct Extension - but it may work for a day, or an hour, then not work.

There a lot of legacy phones around on Craiglist and other local classifieds. There's no use for those phones?

Yes, the phones maybe cheap, but you will spend time getting them working, fault finding when there go wrong, and you will not have all the functions that 3CX can offer to supported phones.

If they are that inexpensive, so much so, that if they don't work, you won't be too put out if you have to "recycle" them, then the only thing you will be loosing, is your time. Can you afford that, and write it off to a learning experience? If you are new to VoIP, it may be worth it even it the phone never works. I just wouldn't buy a "boatload" of them to start. Try to stick to sets that have a GUI, for configuration, rather than having to upload a configuration file, if it's an unsupported set.

The worse case might be that you have to buy a Raspberry Pi, as an SBC, or you end up using them somewhere local, to the 3CX server..

One set that I would highly recommend, and I have picked up several, locally for about $20 each, is the Cisco SPA525G...Wifi/Ethernet, Bluetooth, 5 lines, colour screen, STUN, and a GUI configuration (common to other Linksys/Cisco devices). Hands-down, my favourite manual configuration phone. Check Craigslist, they do show up from time to time.
