Hi,

Small office with 3 Fanvil X4u's configured with STUN on hosted 3CX instance. Tried to upgrade the firmware via 3CX, One phone successfully updated but the other two kept on asking for a username and password. Found out the username and password required were in fact the ext no. and the voicemail pin. Input the info, phone updated the firmware but now doesn't appear in 3CX.

I'm thinking the only way to get them back is to delete the phones from the users, factory restore the phones, then reprovision back to the extensions.Surely there's a better way than that!

Hi Scott,

If the phones were asking for a user/pass, this implies they were indeed setup as STUN.

Perhaps they were setup incorrectly since

a) they are asking for login when they were supposedly already configured
b) they failed to upgrade

I think it is better to start from scratch

1. Manually install the latest firmware from the phone UI - this is the only way you can upgrade them now.
2. Factory reset
3. Provision it as per our guide
4. Since you are clearly using STUN, be aware that we do not provide support on 3CX hosted instances for this method. We only support SBC. If you don't plan on installing an SBC, it's expected you will have issues registering your phones and/or audio issues. In this case you will have to figure out a way to make them work reliably by yourself.

Hi John,

Pretty much what I resorted to. Factory reset and updated firmware manually.

I'm aware STUN isn't supported but wasn't aware of audio issues. I think I'll go down the SBC route. What do you recommend installing it on?

The SBC will indeed be a better solution.

You can install it on a local PC at the phones site. If the PC is also used for other purposes, you can install it there using a VM (ie. VMWare or Hyper-V).

Take a look at the requirements page to get an idea of what hardware size you need:

The Raspberry Pi is also a very good solution, but due to the chip shortage is may be difficult to find one right now. If you have a Pi 3B+ / Pi 4 already available, go ahead and use it.

Thanks John. I was contemplating the Pi but they're pretty sparse as you know. What would you say was the minimum Pi specs that would comfortably do the trick?

We recommend Pi 4B 4GB because this is what we have tested successfully.

You might be able to get away with less possibly, since 3B+ also worked fine in the past, but that was tested with V16 PBX+SBC.

It comes down mostly to how much load you will put on it, if there are too many phones it may underperform.

You might be able to backorder a few Pi 4B boards since they claim they are now prioritizing business customers via their approved resellers, and have some on the side until the shortage subsides. They should ship out as soon as they restock before they give any out to retail.
