Hey 3CX team. When will there be a newer version available in the 3CX approved firmware for the Fanvil X7A? 2.2.0.166 is the version that I currently and it's the one that is shown on this list https://www.3cx.com/support/phone-firmwares/ . I have a DST bug that was fixed in 2.2.0.229 which was released 12.31.2020. I currently pushed 2.6.0.125 on some of my devices. But it would be much easier if 3CX was handling it through it's update method.

Thanks

Hi @aschildmeyerSTR

This is largely dependent upon the manufacturer. As far as we are aware they are currently working on fixing some other pending issues too, and will release the update once everything has been tested.

Cool. That makes sense. I didn't know if you had any visibility into that but it does sound like it's being worked on.

Out of curiosity can you make a note to add the changelogs to this page maybe as well please? I noticed all of the Fanvil x5U, 6U and x210's I have have a pending firmware to go from 2.4.7 to 2.4.10 and I'm curious what the firmware updated/added so I can look for anything odd. The manufacture doesn't have the 2.4.10 firmware or readme/changelog on there webpage either.

Hi @aschildmeyerSTR

We do not keep a changelog for firmware since we do not maintain it ourselves.

The individual phone manufacturers are responsible to provide a changelog on their websites for the fixes they provide (might take while before it shows up on their support pages though).

Hi JohnS_3CX,

I do understand aschildmeyerSTR's concern.
If you have an installation with 2-5 telephones, reverting from a bad firmware update is not a disaster. With larger customers it is.
You (@3cx I mean :-) ) should also understand that in the admin interface you are always confronted with the red exclamation mark and the red marked phones when they have - according to you - an outdated firmware update.
In fact, you are encouraged to update them...

If you then launch the firmware update within the 3CX installation, you only get a popup saying which firmware version you are upgrading to, but no details what will improve and especially which are still the pending issues.

I do not know from which "origin" the 3cx developers are, but a firmware upgrade on coreswitch, firewall or server level without thoroughly reading the changelogs is anything but a good practice.

So maybe provide a small link to a changelog file?

Just my idea, without wanting to get into a negative discussion.

Sincerely

Michel

As already stated, 3CX does not provide the change logs, and if the vendor doesn't post them, 3CX can't link to them. You are not required to update all the phones at once so since we are talking about best practices, a best practice would be to have a demo environment or a small subset of users to test. Those are the ones you would upgrade first, which is something you should do anyways, even with changelogs.

Hi Cobaltit,

My post was from a point of view as a senior network engineer. I have seen things go horribly wrong on firewalls and switches upgrading them without reading the release notes.
And of course, if you have the possibility - as in this particular case - you upgrade one and then look and see. But it is still a shame Fanvil isn't sharing them.....

We understand your point of view however, as we mentioned "individual phone manufacturers are responsible to provide a changelog". For your peace of mind and as good practise - as mentioned by cobaltit - you could test the new firmware by deploying it on a subset of phones first, verify that all is ok and then continue upgrading the phones. If you really want to go deep with this, you could wait until the vendor posts the changelog, go through it, then upgrade a subset of the phones, and then full firmware upgrade for the rest of them. This of course depends on how long it will take for the vendor to post the changelog publicly and how much time the individual partner has been allocated to complete the firmware upgrade by the customer.

Hi @AndreasP_3CX ,

Of course, but I think we are way off-topic :) .
I think this can be marked as "resolved".
