Hi , thinking of building a test system in azure before a potential move of our system from on premise, whats the best way to do this?

Hi there.
You can install your system via the portal.3cx.com and then choose own hosting and Azure as the option

You could do a couple of things:-

Install fresh, backup and restore - CUTOVER migration.

Or, you set up your Azure PBX as FAILOVER and when you're ready to switch, turn off primary and failover.

https://www.3cx.com/docs/failover/

thanks but was thinking more in line of ensuring basic sip functionality and firewall rules are in place before i did a back up and restore

so i guess a fresh system

If you run the wizard through the 3CX portal it will create FW rules for you.

Yes, using portal will be much easier and straight forward for you.

just to clarify , i'm looking at not impacting our current live system , is this possible? or would i have to register for a trial 3cx system and build one off of that.

If you use your existing license, there will be a little blip where the DNS changes to the new IP. But, this is resolved by restarting the system service (i think its that one) on the live PBX to switch it back.

Otherwise, if you want to stay seperate, create a trial.
