Help.. server is running but ODBC connections fail

Is there any way to reinstate the ODBC connectivity tot eh pgsql database without restarting the whole system?

We use SQL queries for a load of things including gettign call details and checking call statuses. When we connect we get the error (for example in pgadmin on a remote server)

server closed the connection unexpectedly.

Is there a way to reset the connection without having to down the server?
