How to Automatically Select Outbound Caller ID Based on Called Area Code (Multiple State Numbers)

Hi everyone! Hope y'all doing great!

I need help understanding whether this setup is possible in 3CX, and if yes, how to configure it properly.

I have multiple DID numbers purchased from different U.S. states (for example: CA, TX, NY, FL, NJ, etc.). I want 3CX to automatically choose the correct outbound caller ID depending on which area code I am dialing.

Example:
When I call a California area code (e.g., 213, 310, 415, 626, 925, etc.), 3CX should automatically use my California DID as the caller ID.
When I call Texas area codes, it should use my Texas DID.
Same logic for the rest of the states.

I’m using a single SIP trunk (Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking).

My goal is to route outbound calls using different caller IDs depending on the dialed number’s area code without manually changing caller ID every time.

Is this possible in the current version of 3CX?
If yes, what is the correct way to configure outbound rules and caller ID selection to achieve this?

Can I make outbound rules match certain U.S. area codes so 3CX can automatically choose the right caller ID for each area code?

Do I need multiple trunks for this, or can it be done with one trunk using multiple DIDs?

Any guidance or examples would be appreciated.

yes

Yes, it is a little time-consuming to create a separate outgoing rule with the corresponding caller ID for each called number with its area code. If different outgoing numbers are to be displayed for different extensions (user) per called area code then further outgoing rules are needed for that as well.

Do I need multiple trunks for this, or can it be done with one trunk using multiple DIDs?
It depends on the provider whether they properly support CLNS. If so, then all outgoing calls can be routed through a single SIP trunk provider. This isn't important for outgoing rules. There will likely be more outgoing rules due to the different area codes and you can then select the appropriate SIP trunk for each one if necessary.

According to ChatGPT there are currently around 335 U.S. area codes. That is a lot of outbound rules, but it will work if you want to go down that path.

If the TO is indeed using a 3CX SMB version, then I really don't know if there isn't a limit on the number of outgoing rules. But the TO should check that themselves :)
 
For each outbound rule, you can enter a comma separated list of "Calls to numbers starting with prefix ". This way you would not need 335 separate rules, and it sounds like you don't need to handle every area code, just some states? Perhaps this approach is more feasible than I originally considered given your limited needs.

How to set up 3CX outbound rules to automatically use state-specific numbers
Go to 3CX Management Console → Outbound Rules.
Create or edit an outbound rule for each state you want to call (e.g., New York, Connecticut, Minnesota,New Jersey etc).
In “Calls to numbers starting with prefix”:
Add all area codes for that state, with +1 in front.
Example for California: +1213,+1415,+1925 … (include all CA area codes you have).
Separate each with a comma.
Assign the rule to your Department/Extensions (e.g. your department).
Select your SIP trunk (Twilio in your case) in the “Route” section.
Set outbound caller ID to the state-specific number you bought.
Save the rule.
Wait ~10–15 seconds for the PBX to fully apply the new rule.
Test calling a number in that state:
3CX should automatically pick the correct DID based on the prefix.
If the call fails on the first try, retry once changes may need a few seconds to propagate.
Repeat for other states.
