I want to add a phone that will be outside of my organizations network.

So my Boss lives in NC and wants to add a phone to the system in order to take call from the phone and so that it free's up his own cellphone. I can't see to figure out how to get it to work. I've seen this link from looking it up https://www.3cx.com/community/threads/autoprovision-and-manage-phone-devices-from-outside-lan.64174/, I am unsure if this would be the way to go, or even what the steps are in general. I am still learning 3cx and have a idea that is straight forward and simple but this is IT, its never that easy

Get something like a Yealink T42U, T43U, T46U which can be a router phone.

Ensure you get a correct power adapter (or a PoE switch if you have one there), and that you connect it over LAN (not WiFi).

These contain a built in SBC that ensures a stable and encrypted connection to 3CX at all times and does not need any special port forwarding etc. You have to install our firmware on it before you provision it.

We have 3CX v20 PBX Enterprise edition hosted on the Azure cloud. Yealink T43U was upgraded with 3CX firmware (T4XU-108.86.0.77.rom) and registered it. I don't see any option to work this phone as a router phone. If there is no local SBC running, the phone doesn't register. In the portal, one SBC needs to be picked. I feel like I am missing something. I will still digging more.

Do you mean it should be the first phone for all the extensions? If so, do all the phones configured need to be removed from the registrations?

No, just for the extension. Did you choose direct connection?

Oh. I found the problem. Initially, all the phones are set up using the 'PNP' discovery mode. If they are adopted using this method, the options to select the SBS/Router Phone, Direct Connection, or Local options are not available.

Previously, in v18, these options could be changed from the user's phone page. However, this is no longer possible in v20.

To do this, you need to go to the user's page, select 'Phones,' then 'Add IP Phone.' After typing the MAC address, those three options will appear. Only SBC can be changed from the phone portal later.

Oh. I found the problem. Initially, all the phones are set up using the 'PNP' discovery mode.

Correct, if you add the phone as PnP then it is either a local phone, or one behind some other SBC.
You cannot change the provisioning type once the phone is added.

The correct method for adding router phones is by entering the model/MAC, selecting "Connect directly", then resetting the phone to load the config from 3CX.

Oh great, i didnt know that. So its fine now to install a router phone next to a normal phone on the same extension?
