Is a SBC mandentory

We plan to move the PBX to a cloud environment so that we can shut down all server hardware.

We have approximately 40 IP devices (Snom 715) in use.

The manuals state that an SBC is required in V20 if we want to use the IP phones.

We also read that we can create an HA cluster with two SBC installations.

The question now is whether we are required to use an SBC. We don't really want any more extra hardware, nor do we want to be dependent on an SBC or router phone for the PBX to function.

What are the alternatives, or are there none?

You are right, We are aware of this, but we are curious to know whether there are now alternatives that do not rely on a simple piece of hardware or software.

You can go with stun... but this is insecure and not supported from 3cx.

You could create a VPN between the cloud system and the local network. If the local router can handle the VPN then no extra hardware, but the administrative cost of VPN setup and management will in most cases be more than adding an SBC in one of the available forms.
