It appears that abyss goes to sleep after awhile if I don't user the admin portal. Is there a way to keep it awake?

Are you syure that it's not your workstation or the server? Make sure that the Power scheme on the server is High Performance (if Win 2008 or 7). Also, take a moment to go in the device manager and uncheck the box allowing Windows to power down the Network card for energy saving (last tab)

What is much more common is that when abyss restarts in the middle of the night it loses all of its cache and the first time you use it, it takes a while for the pages to come up. After that initial load time it is generally pretty responsive until the next restart.
