Working on a potential project with a very distributed work force across 50+ offices with roughly 2,300 endpoints. Does anyone else have something like this in their client portfolio? The majority of the deployments I have been involved with are sub-200 endpoints. I am interested in scaling issues or other potential out of the ordinary issues that would hamper such a deployment. This will be a hosted deployment with HA enabled. Appreciate any feedback.

The other option being considered is Skype for Business, (been there, done that $$), I know from a cost perspective, we have that beat.

I have deployed such a system of around this same number, however I must stress that the client had the infrastructure to support this.

Obviously you need a server whos resources would support such an SC size (I would guess you a either looking at a 512 licence or 1024) but also the right connectivity to support multisite of this magnitude.

The client I deployed with had a VPLS connection to each site (like MPLS but switched not routed) and this made things very easy.

I guess if they don't have MPLS/VPLS you could consider standard VPN.

I think it's a question of how many sites how many handsets per site.

Not so much worried about the connectivity or hardware to operate the system on, we have that pretty well covered. I am more concerned about support and end-user adoption of feature functionality. The customer is very interested in the collaboration aspects of the platform. In the smaller deployments, ad-hoc conference calls and voice mail to email are the dominate "Unified Messaging" features. The desktop sharing, presentation sharing with or without video are the main collaboration points that keep coming up as the driving points behind implementing a new platform. They are currently on an old Avaya legacy system, so there is a huge potential bump the collaboration side of the house.

Having deployed and supported Skype for Business, in large enterprise networks I know what this entails before and after the sale. Comparatively my experiences deploying and supporting 3CX in less than (200) seats has been pretty straight forward and significantly less stressful than S4B on all fronts. Ultimately I am trying to gauge or get a feel for the scaling of features and support to larger enterprises; has your support or client interaction for the 2,000 endpoint client increase exponentially or have you found it to be more linear?

I know this is a broad open ended question and depends on many factors which is why I am looking for things we may have missed or not taken into account. To scale S4B and support it across many sites is resource intensive. Regular updates to the desktop, quarterly updates to server, SQL updates and maintenance keeps people pretty busy.

Where I have never deployed the on premise version of SfB (only smaller deployments to the Microsoft provided hosted variant) I have seen the network diagrams and deployment guides for an on premise SfB installation.

The initial thing that hit me was the sheer amount of different servers required to support the environment - not good and as you have already pointed out, regular updates on each server is a must in an SfB environment.

The advantage of 3CX is that it is deployed on a singular server (unless bridging of course) of which you can select either Microsoft or Linux. With Linux I would expect a nice stable post deployment process, and I would probably recommend the Linux version of 3CX for this reason (and the fact you dont have to purchase a Windows licence) however if you looked at a Windows Server edition the minimum post deployment updates that would be required would be your standard Windows updates and .NET Framework as and when required, but again this is a singular server only.

What you will find with 3CX against SfB is the cost savings, not only on the multi server licences, but with the fact that pretty much all the supported features are bundled in with your single purchase licence: https://www.3cx.com/ordering/pricing/
