Hello everyone,

We have a situation at my employer where the main SIP trunk number is listed as someone's extension. This is causing some issues with vendors and our third party IT support. It looks like I can just change the main SIP trunk number, but I wanted to make sure this won't affect anything else before making the change. My plan is to switch it to a number that is not in use and will be off limits for future lines. Will these changes cause any issues with the SIP trunk?

EDIT: I'd like to clarify. We have a number of DID's using this SIP Trunk. This is not just for one line.

You can not just change your sip trunk number, as your provider will be expecting the correct outgoing number,

When you say 'main SIP trunk number is listed as someone's extension' , please explain more. Have you entered the main number under 'Outbound Caller ID' for the extension.

Look at the activity logs, to see what number is being presented to your sip provider, it could be an issue at they end

When I look at "Route Calls To" the Main Trunk Number is the same as an extension that was given to a user. When you look at the Destination for calls during and outside office hours it is listed as that users extension and name.

Unfortunately I am fairly new to some of the higher level material with 3CX but have been tossed into the admin pool because our previous admin left. No documentation was left over either.

What should I be looking for in the activity logs?

That is partially true as it depends on your trunks settings. The main trunk number can be changed to whatever is needed but make sure that when calling out you are sending the correct caller ID.

I am guessing that each extension has a unique DID and a unique outbound caller ID set under the extensions settings. If that is the case then the main trunk number can be changed.

The main trunk number can be used for some outbound calls as your caller ID going to the provider. Mu suggestion would be to change the main trunk number if that is what is required and add your current main trunk number as the caller ID of the trunk to avoid any issues.
You can do so by accessing your trunk settings / Caller ID tab and add it under the Default Caller ID field
