So I just moved a 3CX to a Pi and its all good apart from it says its cannot reach activation.3cx.com.

the Pi can ping out on the internet and is downloading it's 3CX updates fine.

I can ping the URL mentioned which shows the IP but no response (assume this is by design).

license is due to expire tomorrow but it has been renewed and can see it's now not set to expure until 2020.

Bit stuck on how to get this 3CX activated.

Nevermind.

I had my DNS set to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.

changed it to 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 gave it a reboot and viola.

1.1.1.1 is supposed to be a fast DNS server.. wonder why it didnt like it.

Fast is not the same as reliable, although in this case, Cloudflare DNS is both. However, many ISPs do bad things like use the 1.x.x.x subnet as a private subnet even though it isn't. AT&T is one example of someone that does. If the traffic never makes it to the real 1.1.1.1 then you won't get any DNS resolution. That being said if you had 8.8.8.8 as the backup it should have resolved it anyways.

To test, see if you can ping 1.1.1.1 from the network the Pi is on. If it responds (it should), then see if you can trace to it. If it only takes a couple hops (less than 5) then chances are your ISP is doing bad things.
