I installed gnome on my server and then wireshark installs nicely. So from the server I can do nice captures right from the source. Not for everybody, but I like it. If you want to go from GUI to text simply bring up a bash shell and type telinit 3 for text or telinit 5 for GUI.

My server runs fine with GUI loaded all the time and I have the benefit of management console locally at 127.0.0.1:5000 in case something happens to the network.

I can also run Windows programs with wine (Wine Is Not Emulator) program which like wireshark is also available at the incredible price of free as are most of Linux programs. Viruses don't like Linux.

Sadly the 3CX Windows clients will not run on wine as they check the version and want a later Windows.

Have fun with your free Debian.
