Outbound Caller ID for an Extension

Hi, This is probably a rookie question; but I can't seem to find an answer. If I want to set outbound caller ID on an extension, can you put in an alpha-numeric entry there such as the company name and make it work, or do you have to use the phone number and have the phone company handle the caller ID?

Called ID's are only numbers,

You can set a name as the outbound caller id of an extension however most providers do not accept this and the call might be dropped.

You can set the outbound caller ID (numeric only), and if allowed by your provider, and all outbound trunk settings are correct, it should show at the called end. In some cases, depending on your provider, and the provider at the receiving end, the name, set against the extension, may be passed on. That, however, is the exception rather than the rule.
