Ports on patton gateway

I am using a patton gateway with my 3cx deployment and am using two pots lines with it. One of my pots lines seems to be having higher voltage spikes than the other line causing the port its plugged into, to stop working after a couple days of use. After the port has been is use for a day or two, eventually a server error will appear on handsets when trying to use both lines simultaneously. I have came to the conclusion that the voltage spikes are maybe "frying" the ports? I am just curious as to if anyone else has ever run into this and has any recommendations. Are there any devices I can connect to my pots line to help regulate the voltage? Is this something that is better asked of Patton support or my phone provider (which they are telling me its on my end of course and there's nothing they can do).

Who is your provider? Are they lines from a central office, an ATA "box", or a nearby "remote" site?
Phone line voltage should not normally vary unless the line is crossed with something else (foreign voltage), or, as mentioned, lightning,
I would contact your PSTN provider and voice your concern ASAP. They may ask for some sort of proof that this is happening, but if it is coming from a central office, it may be affecting a number of lines and they may already be aware of it, but not the extent.

Nothing implies high voltage spike exist. But I do notice some glaring misconceptions. For example, all POTS lines were required to have effective transient protection - installed for free - long before any of us even existed.

Meanwhile, that protector (like every effective protector) is only as effective as its earth ground. Only a building owner is responsible for providing and maintaining an item that defines all hardware protection.

Since all incoming wires (TV cable, satellite dish, telephone) are required to have effective protection, then this is rarely a source of incoming high voltage transients.

AC electric is not required and typically has no such protection. Or superior protection already inside every appliance can be compromised by using plug-in protectors.

A surge incoming on AC is inside hunting destructively for earth ground. What is a best path to earth? Those incoming wires that already have effective and properly earthed protection.

Incoming on AC mains to everything. Outgoing to earth destructively via POTS line. A POTS line may have protected everything else. Damage is often on an outgoing path - not an incoming path.

Your conclusions were clearly only speculation. Basic facts (including existing protection that must be known before making any conclusion) say why that POTS line would be damaged. And why other appliances (ie dishwasher, central air, clocks, smoke detectors) may also suffer future damage.

No properly earthed 'whole house' protector means a high voltage transient can be inside hunting for earth ground destructively via every electrical appliance. This time, a best outgoing (and destructive) path may have been a POTS line.

Every protector is only as effective as its earth ground. Wall receptacle safety ground clearly is not earth ground. Was that critical earth ground and connections to it recently inspected? Were plug-in protectors (that can compromise better protection inside a Gateway) being used?
 
I would agree with Leejor, I would contact your provider. While your at it also confirm you do not have anything like BT feature line (which offers PBX type functionality directly on the line or redcare enabled on the line itself.

A ring is well over 100 volts. POTS lines must withstand up to 600 volts without damage.
 
DC voltage is normally 48, ringing voltage (AC) can vary, usually about 90 but can go higher depending on the CO equipment, rural lines versus urban, etc. Some lines can also use over 90 volts DC to activate old type (neon) message waiting lamps. Many telephone protector circuits will clamp at about 130 volts.

That extremetech.com citation contains some honest facts in combination with many outright lies. A protector is only as effective as its earth ground. What does make that earth ground connection is a useful recommendation. What does not (ie plug-in or point of connection protectors) is ineffective; is incorrectly recommended.

If that earth ground does not exist, then even the world's best 'whole house' protector does nothing useful.

Any recommendation that does not discuss THE only and always required item - earth ground - is not based in well proven science.

Described was the most common source of that damage because phone lines already have robust protection from surges (including and not limited to lightning). And because AC electric is not required to have effective protection.

No plug-in solution will avert future damage. Again because it was well known and proven all over the world over 100 years ago. A protector is only as effective as its earth ground.
