Prefix Main Trunk Number with *

What is the reason to prefix the Main Trunk Number in the SIP setup with "*"?
The person who set up our systems is long gone, no one for me to ask. Everything
works fine, the question is out of curiosity. Maybe it's required by our SIP provider.

Is the * being inserted in your outbound rules, or are you required to dial an outside number using a leading *?

Is that a part (last 3 digits) of the caller ID sent, when you make an outgoing call? Is this showing some place else, or just something you came across while looking though the settings?

If everything else is working as it should, I would not bother with it, It may be something that was requested by your provider, or, may not make any difference if changed. I suppose you could change it to see if there is any impact.

I blanked out some of the details. *518 is the area code, there's a 10 digit number there.

The * is used in case the caller id format is changed. Today it might be 1518xxxxxxx and with a change in software by the provider, it might send +1518xxxxxxx or +518xxxxxxx. The *518 catches all of the options.

Could this apply only if you have both DID's along with a MLN?

The main trunk number should only be a number. This is the number that is given to you by your provider.

The * character should never be used in the main trunk number field.
