Prepend 1 for SMS/MMS

We have things set for 10 digital dialing, with 3cx prepending 1 for outgoing calls. 10 digits for the users (works like a cell phone), 11 digits passed to the phone service.

We'd like to do the same for SMS/MMS. Having to add a 1 in some situations and not in others is a challenge for some folks.

Is this currently doable?

I don't think so, but wanted to check.

Unfortunately, this is not possible with SMS as it does not use outbound rules but communicates directly with the provider via webhooks and requires the numbers the messages are sent to be in E164 format (+123456789, for example).

Sounds like we need something LIKE outbound rules that are specific to SMS and prepends missing digits (i.e. if its given in 10 digit it prepends "+1"; if it is given as 11 digit it prepends "+").

Ran into the same thing, had to add the +1 DIDs to my trunk, then select them under the user's "Enable SMS" area.

This is as previously stated sms messages need to be sent using E164 formatted numbers, there are no outbound rules with sms and no possibility to pretend +1. SMS needs to be sent to numbers already in correct format and when adding your SMS numbers to trunks also need to follow this rule. If changes are made to DID numbers after DID numbers are assigned to extensions then they need to be re-assigned.

For 3CX staff, we understand that you currently do not have outbound SMS rules and currently have no mechanism to prepend "+1" to SMS. When we ask about this (or other things), it would be helpful if you would take these as feature requests. Saying things like "no possibility" make it sound like you are refusing to consider our feature requests which is hurting your perception with your users and partners.

If calls fail when adding the +1 required for SMS, you must check with the provider to change the format from their side, most providers (supported ones) have this option within their portal.

My two bits - here in the US, mobile phone users can send SMS using ten digits. But when using 3CX, they cannot. This causes confusion, support calls, and dissatisfied customers.

I understand the technical issue, but I think @FireMedic has a great idea. I'm not sure how the mobile carriers do it, but hoping it can be replicated.

I agree with all points made here. The US uses 10 digit dialing and texting. This should be an easy fix. Just prepand the +1 to the number if it is missing and send it to the webhook. What @Charles_3CX is saying does not seem correct. Data can always be manipulated before being passed to the webhook. Would love this to be a feature request.

As far as I am aware there are no plans to change to a non-E164 format for SMS.
