Problems with @ and $ symbols with SMS

If we send an SMS that contains the symbols @ or $ then the characters are replaced witth the ¿ symbol.
We already raised a ticket at Twillio but I was wondering if other people experience the same problem?

We tried sending from Twilio to a couple different destinations with the characters you mention and they arrive fine. So I am suspecting that Twilio is sending them correctly and it's the locale of the receiving end that at fault here.
