I restored from a backup to recover a system and it won't update to the current version.
It's on an Amazon EC2 and is version 18 Update 3 build 461 and there is an error saying
"3CX failed to establish a TCP connection to activate.3cx.com. Ensure that the local or border firewalls are configured to allow outbound traffic to activate.3cx.com"
But all of this is clear. I get notices that an update is available:

New 18.0 Update 4 FinalOut Of Date18.0.3.46118.0.4.965

But I can't click on the update.

Any ideas what I'm missing?

Before restoration PBX was in same version?
Did you try to reboot the VM ?
Did you try in console to refresh KEY licence infos?

Thanks for the quick response.
No. It was current. I ran into an issue where a now former employee completely locked us out when he left and my only way to manage it was to install a fresh 3cx and restore from a backup from before the time he made the changes.I ran the restore and everything came back up and is working but it just won't update.
Yes. It's been rebooted both at the VM and through the 3cx console.
I've tried to refresh the license key info and that's where I get the error "3CX failed to establish a TCP connection to activate.3cx.com. Ensure that the local or border firewalls are configured to allow outbound traffic to activate.3cx.com"The key info is correct.
I've tried everything I could think of. I have even backed up, reinstalled, and applied the backup and I get stopped here.

Update 3 can't activate anymore. I believe it needs to be update 5 or later. You should be able to install 18u7 and restore from backup during the install. I do not know if you can update older versions without activating.

If you're trying to manually update, a couple notes...
  • You do have to click on the update 4 line before the Download Selected button is enabled (you're choosing which update to install; sometimes apps or templates show there)
  • If you manually update 3CX it does not install any OS security updates; enable automatic updates for this
  • You can disable automatic updates afterwards if you want more control

Right now I just had a thought that I'm trying. In the 3cx portal there's an option to install the current version and in the process it asks if you have a backup file to be used. I've tried this a number of times but it always got hung up. Inbound rules on the server are actually all open right now because of this. I have ssh on port 22 open to all inbound addresses..as well as everything else wide-open for the moment (I know, bad practice but just for troubleshooting this)>
I get hung up on access key where I have the access key ID and access key, they match the key group for the instance. but it gets rejected.

Thanks. And yeah, I've done many restores and rebuilds. Automatic updates are enabled. I get notifications that updates are available. I just can't get it to do it.
I didn't realize that update 3 can't activate anymore so that's probably the issue here. I've been round and round with this thing so I'm not certain, but it seems like I started with a newer version and when I uploaded the backup it set the version back which isn't how I thought it worked. I need to verify this. Right now I'm trying to push it out via portal.3cx.com and upload the backup file in the process. The backup file I just made an hour or so ago and for some reason even though the access key id and secret access key match what's on the amazon instance, it tells me i have the wrong key. So stumped from that direction as well.

OK. Just went back through the trail.
I installed a clean new AMI when I did this. Version was V-18.0.7.312
I applied a backup that was from 18.0.3 and that appears to have reverted the entire system to 18.03

That sounds more like you’re restoring the VM, as opposed to uploading your saved .zip backup file during the after-install configuration wizard?

So I just went through a nightmare but eventually got it all back. Something weird has to be going on with amazon. I installed about six times before finally launching a brand new Machine with 3cx with the default dynamic IP and only after I was able to access the setup completion pages did I swap for the static IP, then reloaded the setup page again on the static IP and went from there. After that, everything worked fine. It installed the latest image, version 18 update 7, let me enter the FQDN, connected to my 3cx portal, SMS worked, all extensions came up and all is well. I have no idea what the deal was. It moved to a different region with a completely different internal IP scheme than before which is fine. It was just bizarre that nothing that I tried other than this would give me anything but older versions when I applied the backup.
So thanks for the input. I have no clue what the deal was but installing from scratch to a newly build VPC solved it all. Never ran into this over maybe 40 installations but now I know how to handle such weirdness. lol

Those were mid-field steps when other things weren't working that should have. To begin, I had reinstalled and all looked good. I uploaded the backup and when I did, it downgraded the installation and I couldn't get it to update to save my life. So I then went for a clean install...same thing once I applied a backup. So then I wiped the instance, built a new one, reassigned everything as I've done so many times and STILL got the same result. I was pulling my hair out!
So finally I built a brand new VM and ran the installer with all default settings, then when I finally got the wizard at the DHCP address, I went and swapped the DHCP for the same static IP I used before and relaunched it and sure enough, it worked perfectly the first time. I probably could have entered the static IP to begin with but I was just trying to make something happen to get the wizard and eliminating as many variables as possible.
Something is clearly wrong with the VM itself. Now that I have a new one running, I can't get the old one to go away. It won't let me remove the network adapter because I don't have permissions to do so yet I'm the only one that has ever had access to the EC2 account. The user info which as you know is a long string of characters is something I've never seen. I have a separate login from root but this is neither of those. I don't have a clue how some random user account that I can't find anywhere in the system could be attached to just the network adapter of an instance where everything else in the same instance is attached to my user account. But I can't delete the old machine, the adapters, the subnets, etc and I can't shut the machine itself down because I don't have permission to shut down the network adapter. Every route I've taken amounts to something else that has to be shut down first and eventually lands at the network adapter that I get a permissions error on. So I have a ticket in on that.
Bottom line....something about the machine itself is bonkers and that was the cause of all the trouble that made absolutely no sense to me and probably anyone else as well. lol.

I was just trying to post a question in the forum and apparently I am not allowed to post in any forum for some reason. So now I'm just testing to see if I can even post on my own previously posted thread. No need for any response from others in this conversation. I just want to see if it actually posts or if it possibly will reset my permissions if it does.... And yes, I am absolutely certain I haven't been banned for anything.
