SBC question

I am in the process of migrating several on-premise systems to cloud, Digital Oceans.

The local phones are all setup to register with the on-premise system using Local Lan. This presents a problems when migrating to the cloud and changing to SBC.

My question is can I go ahead and setup a local SBC in the same network as the on-premise system and reprovision the extensions to connect using SBC before the actual migration. I understand the DNS requirements for SBC and can do that part. Just wondering is adding a SBC on the same local network will have any adverse affects with the local PBX.

Yes, theoretically this will work.

Just need to make sure the SBC resolves the FQDN to the new IP.

Might be best just to import your configuration into the new cloud instance, connect the SBC and modify your phones to be selected with SBC provisioning.

Then just put your provisioning URL into your DHCP server as option 66 and reset your devices. They will automatically connect with the new provisioning URL.

Yesterday, I did the following at one of the locations that has 15 extensions and 3 Grandstream HT802's.

1. Added a DNS entry for the FQDN of the on-premise system that resolves the internal IP address of the phone system.
2. Then I added the SBC and since the local DNS resolves the IP as a local 192.168.XXX.XXX address, the SBC came online with the PBX,
3. Then I logged into the system and changed all the devices to use SBC and reprovisioned.

All the devices stayed online. Calls were received and calls went out. Did not have any interruption with the local users.

I think now, when I am ready, All that needs to be done is the following.

1. Make a full backup of the system including license and FQDN.
2. Shut down the local system.
3. Remove the added DNS entry for the FQDN.
4. Create a new instance at DO and do a restore during the creation.

The system should then be up and running on the new cloud instance.

The only change I would make is make sure the TTL for the internal record is very short unless you just modified the host file on the SBC.
