Setting up a 3CX instance on a VM

I am considering 3CX as our telephony solution and would like to host it in-house. We will also implement an ERP solution.


Our consultant pointed out this link. As I understand from the discussion, the 3CX team do not recommended to install both 3CX and the ERP, which will be ERPNext, in one server.
We discussed the possibility of installing the two applications on two separate VMs which are hosted in one box, but he pointed out that the above discussion rules that out too. As I understand, a VM is a separate instance of server. SO, this is all very confusing. 3CX can be expensive if I have to buy and install it on a separate machine all the time and rules out of my buying AWS EC2 servers since that is also a VM.

If you use a supported VM platform, you shouldn't have any issues running two virtual machines on the same hardware. All our 3CX servers are virtual machines.

The idea of separating the phone system is just so that one program (ERP) doesn't install something that conflicts with the 3CX configuration. Does the ERP run on Windows? You could for instance install Hyper-V, run ERP on the host server, and create a Linux or Windows VM for 3CX. Just keep in mind restarting the host server would take down the phone system.

How large is your phone system? 3CX can install on a Raspberry Pi, even, for small systems.

Hosting 3CX in a VM is not a problem in and of itself. 3CX has easy installation on several cloud platforms. We host it for us and our clients in our data center, in VMs there.

We have run 3CX as a Windows VM in a (4) machine Hyper V cluster for a number of years, starting with V9, without any issues.

Just to be sure our consultant is saying it is risky to host 2 VM - 1 3CX and 1 for the ERP on the same box. Are you saying it's possible?

One host machine with Hyper V - One VM for 3CX and another for ERP is right?

One host and a VM for 3CX and another VM for your ERP software should not be a problem... assuming the host has enough resources (memory, I/O, vCPU). Maybe your consultant is worried about resource contention on that host?

The linked post does not advise not to use 2 VM on 1 host, this is the better method of doing what you are trying to do, the link you have posted advises not to install 3cx on an existing server running an ERP.
