SIP trunk is not required for local IPphone-to-IPphone "intercom" function, is it?

Hi. First exposure to 3CX, trying to check it out. I want to initially configure just 2 telephone sets. The IP phones are SIP phones. They will initially only be used for making "intercom" calls to each other.

The 3CX documentation states that "You must use a supported, register based SIP trunk." Am I correct that SIP trunk(s) are only required if you want to make telephone calls via the PSTN?

To add to what @cobaltit mentioned, have a look at the guide attached: https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/ring-groups-paging-intercom/#h.7y3bt8n9r63v

Each extension will need to have the right "Can Intercomm" (Management Console >> Users >> Extention you'd like to edit >> Rights) enabled and your Paging Dial Code set in Management Console >> Settings >> Dial Codes >> Paging. I'd suggest using *8.
