Had a customer whose phones kept going down yesterday after a power outage in the early morning. They checked what they could and called me. I checked what I could. I found that the SBC kept flapping down and up. There appeared to be no rhyme or reason. Phones had been working fine for months on end.

Ultimately, I uninstalled and reinstalled their SBC (Session Border Controller). I updated the Windows virtual machine on their VMWare server. Rebooted.

Checked 3CX in the cloud. Verified configuration. Checked logs.

Phones kept going down. Suggested customer check and reset firewall and Internet provider router/modem. Kept going down last night and this morning.

Customer checked the VMWare guest machine once more this morning and discovered that somehow (he wouldn't have done this) the power settings on the Windows server OS had CHANGED to go to sleep every 30 minutes. Yes, you read that correctly. Somehow, the Windows Server settings were altered and were set to put the machine to sleep when idle after 30 minutes of inactivity.

It explains why whenever he or I would log in and check the SBC, the phones would magically work again even before we touched anything.

The best we can guess is that a Windows update MAY have altered that. But everyone involved knows that this should NOT happen just from an update. Either way, something changed it, and it caused havoc.

Lesson learned. Added to the archive. Hope this helps someone.
