Hi, this is my first time posting here but I'm struggling to find the answer. I recently took over for a company that has 3cx as its PBX and had to change trunk providers recently. My question is when I'm in the sip trunk setup and tell it to 'route calls to' and forward to outside number outside office hours, my system is using 2 channels until that call is completed and both parties hang up, not when the external number connects. Is this how it should be or am I doing something wrong here? I thought if I transferred a call and the other end pick up then the call would drop off my system.

Yes, that's how external forwarding works on most PBX.

However, you can create a dummy extension, set the external number in the forwarding rules of that extension, then route calls to that. Enable "302 Call Diversion" and make sure "call recording" and "PBX Delivers Audi are disabled. This way, calls will get forwarded directly and leave the PBX completely. That requires your provider to support Diversion header tho.

Ok thank you, I will contact our provider and see if they support that and give it a try.
