Updating from 3CX Version 15.5 to 16

Hello Everyone,
I would like to restore a backup of my current 15.5 configuration when updating to 16, but I want to test this out without impacting the current running server. I started to restore a backup when installing 16 but I have stopped at the license activation check. I have attached a screen shot of where I have interrupted the install. I have removed internet connectivity between each step because I do not want to cause any issues with our current production install. I have created a new trial license. Will the new license work if I put the new key in and reconnect to the internet and continue with the install? Is there a better way to test upgrading to Version 16 without disrupting our current production server? I'm also worried that our sip trunk providers will authenticate with the newly updated server. I'm working on a completely different network from the production server.Thank you for your help.

I should have been a bit more descriptive in the thread's heading. I currently have a production, on premises, 3CX V 15.5 server on Windows 2012R2. I want to do a test update to make sure all functionality is operable after the update. This test environment will let me figure out solutions to possible problems I come across. I went ahead with the new Key and I kept the network adapter off as much as I could during the installation. All services were installed but my data was not restored. I am left with a new installation of the Version 16 3CX software. My username and password from the 15.5 zipped backup was retained, but nothing else. I was expecting recordings, extensions, and configuration settings to be restored. This was not the case. The backup I used for this restore/update was a complete full backup of the 15.5 version. I checked everything I could check when creating the backup in the 15.5 version. Am I missing something? Thank you.

Hi,

Windows 2012R2 is straight up no longer supported in V16, you will have to upgrade or optionally use our Debian ISO https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/

Since you have a trial key, you can use a V15.5SP6 backup (make a full backup without " Include License Key Information & FQDN " ticked) to restore your system on it and explore V16.

If you current system is not showing this version in the management console
then upgrade it first BEFORE taking a backup (very important)

Thanks for the help JohnS_3CX. I was able to update to the latest version using the temporary license and restoring the backup that excluded the FDQN and Key information. Happy to report all custom phone templates work and recordings were converted successfully. I installed 3cx on a Hyper V VM with a fresh install of Windows server 2019 Standard. The VM host machine is server 2012R2. I'm going to continue testing to see if all functionality is intact.

Hi Mark,

Glad to hear! Since the Guest is 2019 you should be ok, even if the host is 2012.
