using a dect phone at a remote site

Hi,

Struggling so looking for some help please!

We have hosted 3cx. I want to put a dect phone in a cottage we rent out that will connect to our system. The cottage has an air cube going out via gigaclear internet. ie its not on our network.

Whats the best way of doing this and is it even possible with a dect phone. I have a w73r and w60b base.

Have tried provisioning it in the office on our network and taking it there. Have tried to remote stun it from there. Auto provision seems to work but its stuck on registration failed.

Do i have to do port forwading as have seen some articles re this? or should it just work?

any help appreciated as very frustrating.

Hello,

If you do not control the network, your best bet is to to install the 3CX SBC locally at the cottage.

The Yealink W60B can use the SBC to bypass any NAT/Firewall/ISP hurdles, and connect to 3CX securely and reliably.

You can temporarily use a PC/Laptop to test the SBC and see what results you get.

I used a sbc successfully for another larger site but really dont want to do that here for one small cottage as there is nowhere to put a small pc. Should it work with 1 phone? is there a list somewhere of what to check nat / firewall wise?

It's not expected to work by default (it will fail or it will be unreliable). You need to do the following:

- Ensure the PBX firewall checker passes
- On the extension untick "Block remote phones using stun (Insecure!)"
- On the extension enable "PBX Delivers Audio"
- Port forward the W60B SIP and RTP ports on the network you don't control
- Disable SIP ALG on the network you don't control

These are the requirements to get it working, but unfortunately it might still not be reliable due to 3rd party factors.

Some Alternatives:

1. If you can get your hands on a Raspberry Pi, it can act as the SBC for you, and it's small enough and power efficient enough to hide somewhere in the cabinet or next to the modem/router in the cottage perhaps.

2. You could VPN into your network and bypass the restrictions

3. A new idea: if you can replace the DECT phone with a normal deskphone, the upcoming V18 Update 6 brings the ability to run some Yealink T5 series phones with a built-in SBC, solving the problem entirely:

Thanks - seem pretty rubbish that a cloud system will not work just for 1 phone! will give that a try and also see how much a gigaclear phone is that's not on 3cx

STUN is fine so long as there isn't anything to impede it, but in reality we see many cases where it's blocked by ISP modems / routers / firewalls.

Essentially this is what SBC solves. It acts as a tunnel or bridge between the phone and the PBX, encrypting traffic in such a way that those factors stop being an issue.
