V20 seemingly failed. Help?

So I clicked to update from V18 (latest) to V20 (and Debian - as install is on a VM using 3CX Debian ISO).

Immediately after I clicked, it popped me to login screen.
I also had (linux) console open in a window, to see if anything related to the update would pop there (or indicate a reboot).
The only thing that I got was a mail that my system was backed up Backup Path: /var/lib/3cxpbx/Instance1/Data/Backups/rescueBackupUpgrade.zip

Nothing happened for a long time (more than 15 minutes) plus I couldn't login admin portal (it says server error).
Also 3CX icon remains red in my computer.

So after quite some time with no feedback of any upgrade taking place, I rebooted the VM.
I reach Debian login screen (says Linux pbx 5.10.0-27-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.205-2 (2023-12-31) x86_64), I can login with root, but I don't get the PBX running...

Help?

Use the rescue backup to reinstall from scratch, or since you can access the machine, perhaps download a full backup if you have one on the system.

Clearly the upgrade failed and something got corrupted (the upgrade can take up to 1h on some slower machines.) Rebooting it midway definitely killed it.

Also, you shouldn't be upgrading to v20 as it's still in RC state. Not official.

In any case I recovered from backup.

You are absolutely right, it does not show as Beta but it is in Release Candidate state so not yet officially released.
Please follow our blog post section to see when it will be officially released so you can upgrade. Also you will need to allow some time for the update to finish before restarting next time. It needs to go through the PBX upgrade and 2 Debian OS versions so it might take a while.

Well I definitely let it do its stuff quite some time, BUT (and this is something to correct by release, if you ask me) it gave NO feedback on progress, either in GUI (which "died" the second I clicked to update anyway) OR console. We didn't know if something is happening! There must be a way to send some feedback of at least the main steps. Even if we have to be in main shell console to read it.

I did notice that the console refreshed to linux kernel 11 (instead of 10 and NOT 12... is this normal?)...
Left way more time and still nothing.

The main issue is that there was no feedback and nothing to see if progress still goes.
(at the very least, give us a process name I should check if it is running to understand if update is still taking place)
The update script SHOULD pop messages at least in the console.

Right now I am "scared" to do the update even when full release is out.
Also since the current is RC, it should say so in the GUI (and not expect people to read the blog - which is good practice, sure - but cannot be asked as a prerequisite... GUI itself should be "self contained" in what needs to be communicated from the company to the client).

If you really want to get feedback while upgrading then you can just tail -f /tmp/UPDATE.log .

The upgrade script will typically send an email to the admin with the result of the upgrade. If not, then it must have encountered a major error or been interrupted (via a reboot etc, or a network issue). In any case the log will provide all the information.

We always advise customers to take a snapshot/backup of their server before upgrading. If you do that then even if it fails you can easily restore.

This should not hold you back from upgrading to V20 (after the final release) as that is just one way of migrating. You can always spin up a new instance using our V20 Debian ISO and restore from backup. It may actually be faster and you start fresh.

@NULUSIOS2 The upgrade does go to Debian 11 then again to 12. It should send an email when complete. If upgrading 3CX manually (generally not recommended except for prerelease or hotfixes) then the first thing it does is log you out, so that's normal.
