V20 upgrade failure : Apt issue detected

During one of our V20 upgrades, we were faced with a failure. The log provided the below error. When testing apt, we are faced with "not found". It appears that there is no dpkg manager on the install now. Has anyone faced this and recovered without a clean install and backup recovery?

When navigating to the ap-get directory.... it sure isn't there.

A skilled linux admin may be able to recover it, however it is not recommended doing so as it may cause other problems down the line.

A restore from backup is advisable and the way to go in such cases.

This is the second one we have observed hosted in Azure. Since we have multiple hosted in Azure, prior to 3CX falling out of love with Azure, do you have any idea why we are experiencing this with the V20 upgrade. Not really looking forward to rebuilding all the Azure tenants.

There are certain circumstances under which the upgrade might fail. We continuously analyze these and make improvements. You may wish to hold on until the script's next update which could address the issue you are having. We can't provide an exact date when that would be though. (I'll reply to this thread once that is done so you know)

Just did an upgrade last night and hit similar issue. 1st the microsoft-prod.list source file caused an issue, removed that from /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and ran the upgrade from gui, that killed apt so reinstalled apt from Debian repository, then found someone who had another line to upgrade (download the script and run, but also added some other packages before the run -wont post the link to the site as I don't want to suggest others do it), found the microsoft-prod.list had returned, so removed, ran script and it failed part way on the microsoft-prod.list being there (it had returned, not 100% sure how, hypothetically with the change of the hyperv-daemons package but I can't confirm for definite), deleted and ran script from terminal again, but kept suspending process to check for (and remove) the microsoft-prod.list to stop the process failing on that and it went through successfully.

From the failure log, apt seems to be removed due to the below bit
[33m====== [22:34:02] Preparation: Removing backport package gpgv

The script doesn't seem to install gpgv2 prior to this (which is one of the packages installed as part of fixing apt I think or one of the additional from the guide alluded to above) so apt and associated packages is removed as it depends on gpgv or gpgv1 or gpgv2,. Or maybe if there's a way for the script to check if an apt purge will get rid of apt and stop at that point (not sure if that's possible, but would stop it breaking the system if it is).

If the script checks for microsoft-prod.list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ prior to each apt run (and delete), it would add a tiny amount to the script but would remove that as a barrier. This returns at the end of the script (I'm assuming after reinstall off hyperv-daemons).

Hope that might help with developing the script further. I need to upgrade the Azure deployed 3CX that hosts 30+ schools for work in a few weeks time and it would be nice to not have to do that as a work around.
