I'm getting ready to migrate my phone system from an existing 3CXv8 (running on XP with a real computer) to a new v9 setup with Win2k8R2 in a Hyper-V VM. I'm using http://www.3cx.com/blog/docs/hyper-v-instance/ as a guide and have a few questions.

The article says
Enable the ‘Desktop Experience’ role and click next.
what is this for?

The article says
After the reboot, ensure that a media player of your choice is installed and is set to open MP3 and WAV files without any prompts appearing.
what us this for?

I don't really have an issue with doing these things, I'm just curious what they are for.

I will not be using the Sykpe feature.
I plan on using Abyss.
I have about 20 extensions and use a VOIP provider.

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

As far as I understand, Desktop Experience installs components that then install some codecs which are required. See here for what all is included in Desktop Experience -

Windows Media Player is one of those things...

I use win2k8r2 over year. WE dont have any problem whith v8. and v9. All work fine without any additional components.

As i understand that is used for the following:
voice mail and music on-hold
