We have a wellgate 2540 for four incoming lines. Regular phone calls are fine. When someone leaves a voicemail and hangs up, the system keeps the line open for several minutes. Any idea where to change that feature?

You would have to "adjust" how the gateway detects a PSTN disconnect. There are usually 3 ways that can be done.

Silence detection

Disconnect tone detection

CPC disconnect detection (momentary voltage disconnect on PSTN line) may not be available on all lines

That last one is the most preferable, but not all providers supply that feature. Silence detection can be a bit tricky if there is extended silence, or very low audio (music on hold), on existing calls.

Disconnect tone must be set to detect the tone sent by your provider, that may vary from one location to another.

Not having used the Wellgate, I'm not sure what options it has available.

For someone in the future that has this problem. It is detect voltage drop in FXO settings of the Wellgate. It allows the line to disconnect.

That would be the CPC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calling_party_control option .

While it is the best (most reliable) method to use, not all providers offer it, or, in some cases may charge extra for it. A lot depends on the type (make/linecard) of switching equipment in the serving central office.
