3cx mobile app not working without 3cx Server internet connection

Hello all,

This is my first question in this forum, We have a remote office and We plan to replace the old Panasonic PBX with 3cx IP PBX @ this site and connect users through mobile softphone, I installed a demo Lab to achieve this implementation and I found the softphone does not ring if the internet disconnected on 3cx server, unfortunately, the site at the isolated area and maybe the internet disconnect one or two times per day.

my equation is how to keep the mobile softphone users connected and perform calls during the 3cx Server internet outage?

If using 3CX mobile apps, the 3CX server needs a internet connection for the following reason

1. 3CX apps use 3CX tunnel to communicate back to the server 3CX

2. 3CX server uses Apple and Google push to wake up the phones, to receive calls

If the 3CX server does not have internet access, your remote users will not function - there is no way round this

Have you thought about putting the 3CX in the cloud ?

we cannot host the 3cx no the cloud due to bad single of mobile and internet coverage at this site.

The server should be connected to the internet, even if the mobile users and server at the same local LAN?
also correct me if I can use another Network nic for redundancy internet on 3cx server, to provide the 3cx server with 2 internet source.

Hi,

As @Saqqara has said hosting your system will be the best solution, once 3cx looses internet it will no longer function for mobile apps.

If you are thinking about putting 2 internet connections in and trying to fail over this will cause additional problems as the external IP will change, in this circumstance you will still be better hosting the 3cx somewhere else and just have a router with failover internet connections it will save you problems with the 3CX changing external Addresses.

For this setup you best install an on premise system. Then you are connected at all times. If its a small site you can install it on a Raspberry Pi 4

Hi @Mo_hassan,

Yes it will work to make calls but bear in mind that with the Mobile App, receiving calls relies on PUSH notifications, which come from the Apple / Google PUSH servers.

I assume that because the internet is spotty, you'd prefer to be using an analog gateway rather than a SIP trunk to make / receive calls to outside numbers.

If you will be using an analog gateway and your PBX will be on premise, and your mobile apps are connected to the same network as the other two devices, then the bandwidth consumed for calls by todays standards is considered negligible.

If you want a more precise breakdown, bandwidth depends on what codecs will be used and the amount of calls. We have an article outlining the usage here.

Yes , we will used patton FXO to preform external call , and all devices at the same Network as well as mobile app connected at the Network WiFi .

No, they won't stop working. What you could also use are the Web Client and Windows App which don't require the internet. In fact, ONLY the mobile app will have a problem receiving calls as it relies on PUSH notifications which requires the internet to receive them.
