We have a client that has a cloud hosted PBX and connects to it via the softphone client on android and apple. They frequently have calls drop and quality issues. I am unsure at this point if putting an SBC controller onsite would do anything.

Does anyone have any insight?

Sbc will not make any difference as the soft phone does not use the sbc

It connects directly to the 3cx server via the tunnel port 5090

Do you have the same issue if connected via WiFi or 4g ?

what is the preferred codec used?

It connects directly to the 3cx server via the tunnel port 5090

This isn't true anymore and hasn't been for sometime.. By default the soft phones try a direct SIP connection and then if they can't, fail over to tunnel.
