When adding extensions i am not given the option to select a different group, So its causing extra work having to go back and add them to the correct group and remove them from the Default Group

The logic of group creation and extensions has changed and follows the likes of Google Groups, Active Directory, Azure, Amazon and other group oriented services just to give you some examples.
In all the above interfaces, when you create a group (it can be even a department) you first create the group, give this group a name and then you add the members and assign the roles and rights. It is a step by step procedure.
This is how the new interface works and it is much cleaner and more understandable.
Yes maybe it was quicker before - but it was complicated because it had two entry points and that is not ideal in software design. Also another point , it is not like this is an every day process , what I mean to say is that you do not create and edit groups every day.
