Analog PABX phones

Hi all,

Just a quick question, I know that VOIP phones cannot be used through just a phone line, a VOIP system is required, but can you use PBX (PABX) phones, just connected to a recular line. I always thought you could, just not being able to use the Hold features etc.

For most systems, no. Unless the manufacturer has an option for standard SIP firmware.

I.E. the digital phones use proprietary ways to communicate and won't work with an ATA. The IP phones use SIP but change the way the headers are formatted to work with their system.

it sounds like you are talking about IP phones here, I was referring to PBX phones. These connect to a system, which plugs into a phone line. I was wondering if you could use these phones, by just plugging them into the line, without the pbx.

No PABX phones can not be connected directly to the pstn line - most pabx systems use their own procotol to connect the phones.

Not really a 3CX related question, but the above replies are valid.

Custom PABX systems usually came with companion phone models, made specifically to work hand in hand with them.

If you have a specific model/brand in mind you might have better luck asking in a relevant forum that deals with analog PBX devices.
