my apologies for the late reply, but it seems the issue has resolved itself.
We recently changed our provider (PSTN) and since then the problem has not come up again.
Since nothing else has changed in our setup I can only guess that the problem was somehow related to the phone line.
I will definitly post captures if it comes up again - sorry I can't be of more help.
