Hi,

My broadband {fixed IP and 3CX DNS name} , failed (now for over a week. I bought a 4G modem for the second WAN port on my router, which also has DDNS.

Can I use the new DDNS name in the PBX config, to allow the trunk to connect over the 4G connection or will other things fail?

PS I installed the free 3CX PBX at home, I understand 3CX not wanting to provide tech support but I don't understand the terms in this statement...

"Choose a 3CX StartUP or 3CX Hosted instance together with a preferred or supported provider which will resolve most issues right off the bat."

Regards...

The statement means that if you are using a non-supported VoIP provider, then if you do run into problems, as there is most likely no template, to correctly configure all of the settings, which would have been tested, on the supported providers, you are on your own.
As far as changing to a DDNS...even if you could, any external extension using the new DDNS would be blocked, as 3CX will only accept registration attempts (or calls) if the FQDN matches that set in the PBX. So while the call may reach the PBX, it won't go though.

If it is simply your IP changing, then change 3CX to a dynamic IP, and continue using the 3CX FQDN

Thanks, I will try the Dynamic IP which for anyone reading this post is found in ..
  1. Dashboard
  2. Settings (Left Side text Menu)
  3. Network (blue icon)
  4. Public IP (tab)
  5. External IP Configuration section
  6. Static IP entry {if you have one)
  7. Tick the "Dynamic Public IP (IP Changes)" button
  8. Click OK
I will report back when I test this setting with my unreliable fibre (ok it is the UK) and when switching to 4G.

(Unrelated question for anyone, I have a 5G area about thirty yards away, shown as a splodge on the coverage map which does not cover my location, can I connect to this using an external antenna?)

Regarding support I assumed as I setup my home office for my business, with a trunk from Gradwell that this counts as a "Supported Provider" ?

4G modem connected to my router as before, removed primary connection, and pinged it and waited possibly a couple of minutes before it failed to ping on the fixed IP.

Email from 3CX arrived saying ..

3CX has detected that your Public IP Address has changed to .

But no address listed.

Looking in the Synology router fail-over section the 4G address was there.

Tried calling landline from mobile.

Failed

The IP can take up to 6 hours to change unless you have a Pro licence. So it's not for a system that is changing IP daily. You can confirm by doing a tracert to the hostname (PC, at the command prompt), and see if the correct IP shows.

You might check to see how often the IP actually changes, If it remains the same for several days, then you might want to change back to a static IP, using the one they have issued, and see how long that remains valid.

You can connect an external antenna to your 5G router if the existing antenna is removable, and you have the correct antenna, or extender length of coax cable, for the frequency used. Perhaps something directional?
