Docker SBC

I am using OpenMediaVault at my home office. I just had to reload it after it running for 7 years without issue. It looks like the developers are pushing docker for most of the plugins now. I am very new to docker.

I was using VirtualBox to run a 3CX SBC. But, docker seems to be a better choice. But, as I don't know it well, I was wondering if anyone had setup an SBC v16 in docker and could share the results on how to set it up.

If not, is there someone familiar with docker that could help walk me through getting this to work?

I don't think Docker is supported for the SBC. It could certainly work but I'd recommend going with a Raspberry Pi as it IS supported and also recommended.

Docker is more useful for webapps, small workers or things like that.

I know it works good on a Raspberry Pi. Have it installed on several. But, as I have this server running 24/7, I didn't see the purpose in adding another device. So, I thought running it in Docker would work as I have other apps running great in Docker.

I was just hoping someone with more knowledge might be able to help out. But, if not I will just go back to VirtualBox again. :-(

Why not use VMware vSphere on that server so you can manage each VM easily? Using VirtualBox on, I suppose, a Windows Server, is not optimal and adds a lot of OS overhead. VMware, on the other end, is much smaller and lighter as overhead.

I do have quite a lot of experience with Docker and can tell you right now that it is not optimized for this kind of use at all. Networking would be a mess and danger of instability and compatibility issues are enough to make this a PITA to manage. Just the fact that a container might not be always running is the biggest problem.

Stick with a Pi, a miniPC or simply use a VM with either VirtualBox or VMware (I recommend using Hyper-V on Windows since it's built-in and easy to work with. An SBC doesn't require a lot of setup.
