I've got certain phones registered outside the LAN that can't accept a attended transfer. I've found a work around which is setting Support Re-invites to false under Extensions > Options > Troubleshooting. Does anyone know what the long term implications of setting this to false is? From testing I can see that the callers information doesn't update. I've searched the forums and it is always recommended that it is turned on but I can't find any specific reasons.

A Re-Invite allows a change (of information) to be sent regarding an existing session (an established call) rather than establishing a new session. If the device you are using supports this, and you need this feature, then check the box.

Hi,

Re-invites enable some additional SIP functionality that would not be possible otherwise ie. you can re-invite the other party to switch to a different codec when switching from audio call to video call, fax lines can switch to T.38 mode, call transfers can show you the caller ID of the person being transferred to you, you can save some bandwidth when putting a line on hold, you can have the PBX not always proxy the audio for local calls or when using a local analog gateway...

They are not strictly necessary for most things and you should not really face issues, you just have a less rich experience but the core functions still work.

Supported models, when provisioned in supported ways, should be able to use re-invites and have the extra benefits.
