Extensions: Desktop clients with mobile softphones

What's the best/typical way to balance a user that wants to use a mobile app, as well as a desktop client?

Do people typically just log in with both the mobile phone and the desktop client with the same extension?

Or do they have two separate extensions such as:

1111 - John Doe's Mobile
1112 - John Doe's Desktop at Work
1113 - John Doe's Laptop
1114 - John Doe's Desktop at home

You can have both running at the same time. Both will ring for incoming calls. For outgoing, in the dialer there is a dropdown "Call using" which lets you pick the device to use for voice (app, desk phone, smartphone).

It's a bit more confusing if the PCs are all left connected at the same time as the dropdown doesn't differentiate devices. If the wrong one is picked it can cause confusion. So I try to close it out when switching locations, if I leave my home PC on. (exit from the system tray)
