I just got a new X5U for testing. Callers can hear themselves echoing back anytime I use the handset. The speaker phone seems to work fine. Anyone else notice this?

Hi Corey

That should not really be happening. Try calling something like the voicemail box and talk while the message is playing.

- Do you still hear an echo there?
- Firmware Version?
- PBX Version?

Just to clarify, if I answer a call on my X5U, the person on the other end can hear their own voice echoing back to them. The call sounds fine on the X5U end.

I verified it using my own cell phone to call my X5U.

There is no difference between calls via SIP truck or internal calls from another extension.

If I use the X5U speakerphone, no trouble at all. As soon as I pickup the X5U handset, they start hearing themselves.

Phone firmware is 2.2.13
System is 16.0.8.9

Ok then try the following to see if we can isolate it to the handset alone.

1. Call the X5U, answer the call
2. Confirm the caller can hear echo
3. Now unplug the spiral cable from the handset
4. Ask the caller if the echo went away during the time the spiral cable was unplugged
5. Put it back in, confirm that the echo returns

Let us know of the outcome

Interesting

With the handset cord unplugged, the echo is much clearer.
When it is plugged in, the echo is distorted.

Hi Corey,

Another thing, unplug the spiral cord from the back of the phone (not from the handset) so there is nothing plugged into the phone. Just wondering if the cable is causing any interference for you.

Also please note what codec the phone is using, and try playing a bit with the codecs. Would be interesting to see if it only happens on specific codecs.

Meanwhile I should have mentioned originally, it is a good idea to factory reset the phone and reprovision it (don't use custom templates) just to ensure that it also happens when everything is default, and eliminate the possibility that a setting was changed

Removing the spiral cord from the back of the phone made no difference.

I did a factory reset and provisioned with the default template. No difference. (BTW, the line "Exception for X5S" should be "Exception for X5S & X5U" on this page... https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/factory-reset-fanvil-x-series/ )

I removed all codecs except G729 and re-provisioned. No difference. (The BLFs blinked when I re-provisioned)

Hi Corey,

I have tested mine and it will not produce this issue (same FW same PBX ver.) so I'm beginning to suspect this may possibly be a hardware issue since both internal and external calls produce this.

As a crosscheck I would also connect this device to a different PBX, and then if you still face the issue then you may have to contact your Fanvil reseller to check it.

I tested it with a blue tooth headset, and did not have the problem. I'm just going to return the phone, I think it must be a lemon.
