Fax setup

Hello! So we are trying to setup the ability for our client to use an analog fax machine. We have a ATA in palce and I tried setting it up to connect to 3CX but when it does there is no dial tone. Maybe you guys can help us we're a bit new here. I worked for a previous MSP that sold it and we used an ATA to do this and it worked great. I have the fax server setup and a fax extension the ATA is supposed to be reaching out to. We are using wiretap as our SIP provider. Any ideas?

Also if using T.38 FAX ensure your voip provider supports it, otherwise you need to use G711.

We do support T.38. If you're registering your ATA to your local PBX then your PBX should produce dial-tone. Please contact us directly if you need support. Good luck!!

How was the ATA provisioned? Is it local (I hope so), to the PBX?

It was provisioned remotely for testing. Im onsite now so hope I get a different result. And the model is Cisco SPA112. Also Hi Cody! You guys are all over the place! Wiretap support is the best!

So update, I was able to get it connected but at this point I cant seem to send faxs, it dials out and I hear the remote machine answering and it just fails to connect every time its strange. I connected a regular phone to it and it sounds perfect. Any input?

3CX won't support a remote Fax extension unless it is using VPN.

I currently have a Cisco SPA 112 working fine. I got the Cisco device to register against the Linux version of the 3CX SBC. I have been receiving and sending faxes with no problems for several weeks now out of my home office.

Our server is in the cloud running on the Linux version.

We ended up going with a magicjack for this particular customer. We even tried a Granstream ht801 and had the same exact result. Neither 3CX nor Wiretap was able to resolve the issue. Doesn't work on either t38 or passthrough.

Is it set up as a Fax extension in 3CX? As far as I'm aware, isn't permitted by the PBX.

No, just a standard extension. I had similar issues when trying to configure the device as a fax extension. I have another phone system in my lab that gave me the idea to authenticate against the SBC, that has allowed the ATA to register with 3CX.

No its all local. I gave up on the cisco and grabbed a grandstreamht801 which is supported with the same exact result. I did have the cisco configured as he stated above and it worked in the exact same fashion.

Correct.

• ATA is setup as standard extension (no voicemail, don't think this matters)
• I am not using STUN, I have a Linux 3CX SCB at home that everything is going through, including the Cisco ATA
• I am not using t.38, G 7.11
• I have made several hundred outgoing faxes and received probably less than 100 with no issue
• I also adjusted my FAX machine to accept VOIP, an option under my brother printer.
• I also placed the FAX machine to auto detect after 3 rings and that is working correctly

So far so good. I didn't think it would work as I normally have my clients keep one analog line strictly for faxing.
