Gcloud - reducing the size of a boot disk

I realise this isn't strictly a 3CX issue, but I've struggled to find help elsewhere, and it is for a 3CX instance.

Does anyone have a strategy for reducing the size of a boot disk on Gcloud with the minimum amount of downtime?

We switched to archiving our call recording to a storage bucket, so now need a much smaller boot disk. I (foolishly) assumed there would be tools available (snapshot / clone) that would allow us to do this in Gcloud. There aren't...

The only reference in the Gcloud documentation is that you have to create a new disk, which isn't really helpful given the new disk will be blank.



It would be fairly easy if it weren't a boot disk.

Google / reddit has been pretty unhelpful.

This appears to have been made incredibly difficult by Google... can't imagine what motivates them to make it easy to grow disks but not to shrink them. Oh wait... $$$

It's almost going to be easier to deploy a new VM... and restore from backup.

This is actually the case for most cloud providers. They allow you to only extend a disk, not shrink.

That would probably save you time and frustration. Many times it is easier and faster to just start from scratch than trying to fix an issue.
