Hello All -

I think I might be going crazy, but I was looking at the IP configuration in version 20 and all of my instances are showing 8.8.8.8 for DNS. I am pretty sure during setup I had used our internal DNS. Is there anyway to change this or will this break anything like 3CX Support helping us down the road.

Where are you seeing the DNS? IIRC, DNS was taken from the OS.

Admin -> Dashboard -> Click on IP Config. It pops open a new windows with your IP config and it shows 8.8.8.8#53

Ah, I can confirm my DNS is set the same way.

I can't see this as working out long term because if I have a CFD writing to SQL and I'm addressing it by FQDN, my internal FQDN isn't going to resolve off of Google's DNS servers. Perhaps someone from 3CX can clarify how this is used vs the OS setting.

3CX are now requiring split DNS be configured for your PBX FQDN (see this page and this page). This means that any computer using your internal DNS server will get the local IP of the PBX and the external computers will get the Internet IP of the PBX.

I'm not sure how this will affect your CFD but, if it's running on the PBX, I suspect that it will just loopback (i.e.: resolve as 127.0.0.1) - This is just a guess.

We wouldn't be running the SQL database on the 3CX server, only the 3CX software runs there.

Server A = 3CX
Server B = SQL

In Server A we have a CFD that is storing data in server B (as some.server.internal). If you query that name (some.server.internal) against 8.8.8.8, you won't get a reply. But if you query it against the internal server, you will get the IP.


I'm well aware of the Split DNS requirement and how to set it up - I wrote some of the docs about this - but if the PBX is hardcoded to use an external DNS server, no amount of internal DNS setup will be used.
