Google Voice and 3CX

It does work with 3CX.. but I haven't run my two GV numbers through it in months. For the now, I have an SPA504G on my home office desk with the lines configured for each.

Wifey complained that the phone was ringing for a few minutes one day.. indeed the handset said I missed a call.. must have been a wrong number.

Short version: it does with with 3CX just fine. The only thing I heard thus far was a small request to consider donating before my call originated.

Thanks for confirming it, how did you actually configured the SIP trunking in 3CX for Simonics? As they only provide Server, Username, Secret, Registration string (Asterisk format) and Dialing format.

Isn't that enough? The dialling format would be determined by the 3CX outbound rules that you create. The server is self explanatory, as is the username, the secret is probably the password. I'm not certain what the registration string is but it may simply be all of the preceding information in a format that asterisk can use when registering.

Given that the Username and Password are the only variables unique to each user, there are only so many combinations to try to get it to work.

I'm sure that the provider assumes that people using the service have a basic understanding of how SIP works, along with the terms involved. Some equipment/makers/provider do have slightly different names for things, but SIP has a standard set of rules. If you are just starting off, you might want to do a quick review of how it all works or risk running into even more perplexing problems down the road. The 3CX site has a lot of information, but here is a link to some basics. http://www.siptutorial.net/SIP/

Since I'm at home, I looked at my SPA504G's settings..

Yeah.. Server register (SIP server hostname).. but that blah.simonics.com there.
Username becomes the Authenticaion ID.
Secret is your Authentication Password.

As for External Number.. unclear if you need the GV1##########, 1##########, or just ##########, I don't have it hooked into a PBX at present, so this bit doesn't apply to my handset's registration. You can sort that one out.

Based on the "Registration string" they provide.. my guess is the External Number should be 1##########.

That should be sufficient to get the trunk registered. As Leejor states, you will need an outbound dialing rule established if you want to test outbound. For inbound, you also have to tweak an option in Google Voice.. don't ask me which one.. perhaps Chat?.. would only affect inbound call routing with regards to Google. Test.. it should route the call to 3CX. If not.. check the settings in your GV account. I believe you will "not" want call confirmation set, for starters.. but that may not be a problem after all (unless you have an IVR answer.. :P).

Thanks for the tips for setup on Cisco Phone, but that's not something I'm trying to do. I'm trying to use that as a SIP/VOIP provider on 3CX, so all my extensions connected to the 3CX Phone System could use GV as a SIP Trunking to make or receives calls, more importantly, it could also work with Digital Receptionist in 3CX Phone System.

Like the Skype connect works with 3CX tutorial found here: https://www.3cx.com/blog/docs/configure-3cx-with-skype-connect/
I'm trying to use GV + Simonic.com to make it work with 3CX.

Those tips were for getting it registered in 3CX..
Fine.. I added it as a VoIP provider in 3CX.. worked fine. Inbound and outbound.
Skype Connect is fine.. but you'll pay for the "channels" with it.. don't come cheap.
Please don't screw up this free service by trying to run production with this gateway. I use it for test/demo.. that's about it.
I doubt you could get more than one concurrent call with GV anyway.. and I'm not going to try.

It appears that Google Voice/Chat/Talk still works and Obihai (ATA) once again boasts support.... and by the above post I had hoped to find google in the worldwide voip providers but it's not there. I'm not sure but assume it works via the same methods (XMPP?) used by many hosted PBXs and I previously had it working with an asterisk plug-in. Given that I've now just last week spent all my time and energy committing to 3CX, I'm hoping someone has this on their 'add feature' list or can offer a path to program/plug-in to my 3CX installation.

I would not hold my breath waiting for 3CX to be compatible (without an external device) with GV. At this point (and that very well could change) , GV is not a commercial offering, and was not designed (on purpose, I'm sure) to be easily being connected to a run-of-the-mill SIP device, let alone a PBX.

As far as I'm aware, it is still only offered in the US, which rather limits the market.

Who knows what the future will bring...Skype went from being solely a proprietary application to also offering SIP trunking. Google Voice may end up following that route.

Google voice was available in various forms but almost anyone can use it as 'Chat' available right in gmail. Many pbx's (installed or hosted) had and still have the ability to sign on to Google voice. It's not a SIP client on the front end but works as such when signed in via your gmail account. I've personally never had 'Google Voice' in that form (ie. never had a DID) but enjoyed for years free outbound calling through the asterisk client I installed on my 'openwrt' loaed router. I don't think there's anything overly special about this as lots of people have done it and obihai even managed it within their ata (it's not hardware dependent).

...and while Google never meant this as a commercial offering, many companies got rich using it. The bigger question is whether the crew at 3CX are solely focussed on commercial pursuits or they have bigger sights. I'm trying 3CX with the understanding it's the only viable Window's PBX solution and I'm sure many 'non-commercial' people are. If I'm wrong and 3CX then I'll switch to a virtual box/FreePBX solution or other asterisk 12 based PBX's where it's simply a plug-in.

For anyone so inclined - the methods are published by Google here
https://developers.google.com/talk/jep_extensions/oauth
https://developers.google.com/talk/open_communications

further, the author at a well known google voice forwarding site (essentially handles the google login and relays the sip session to your capable DID or pbx) says he's working to re-open registrations given that Google has not altogether abandoned XMPP ( http://xmpp.org/2015/03/no-its-not-the-end-of-xmpp-for-google-talk/ ). Free outbound calling in NA is hard to ignore and most PBX providers are not... so my hope is that 3CX isn't either.
