Grandstream HT802 not attempting to register is connection drops

Hello everyone!

I have recently purchased a Grandstream HT802 for a remote location over OpenVPN (Not configured on the Grandstream but on the router)
I can easily provision the unit (It even auto provisions on boot) and it works fine so far.

The issue that I'm facing is when the connection drops, if for some reason I restart the server on the other side, or even worse, if the modem on one of the locations restart, the Grandstream will lose the registration and not attempt to reconnect it and requires that I manually restart the unit.

Do you have any idea on what could be wrong? Have anyone faced this issue?

The device is full of configuration options, I don't actually know what information do you need to help me

That's probably due to UDP over VPN which can be flacky sometimes, specially with OpenVPN.

Try setting the ATA to TCP and see (remove the provisioning link to prevent it from going back to UDP while you test.)

Also make sure you're on the latest firmware: https://www.grandstream.com/support/firmware

I have just tested it, selected TCP instead of UDP but the issue persists.
I had updated the unit to the most recent firmware, and later on, given the issue, I have tried to update to the beta firmware but the issue persists on both.

Why not use an SBC instead of OpenVPN? It would probably work much better and is supported.

I have though about it but OpenVPN was already configured as client on the router so the PCs on that network can access the other side. Also I don't have any PC that I can leave 24/7 turned on for this.

I think this might not be an issue of OpenVPN being in the meddle but a configuration issue.

By the end of this month I will be on the location where the server is. I will try to connect it to the same network as the 3CX server and see if the issue persists. If everything goes ok I will consider on adding a SBC on the remote network.

As a temporary workaround I have set the GrandStream to restart everyday at 6AM so if during the day it loses connecting, it would be fine the next day.
