The way the article talks about emails in hosted vs self-hosted sounds like the SMTP won't be included in regular licenses at some point?

"Email
We will send out emails for you if you cannot configure M365, Google or a custom mailer. In self hosted you have to find your own email provider. Although we recommend using your own mail provider for most cases."

And then, in self-hosted section:

It goes without saying, you must personally ensure everything above as well as the below:

• Updates are applied promptly
• Your server is monitored
• Security announcements posted on our blog are followed
• Email and notification systems are configured correctly <---- this one

Great! I was worried lol we use the 3CX SMTP for all small customers who don't send lots of email.

If there was a change to SMTP options, it would be convenient to add an SMTP outbound relay (from localhost) on the 3CX server itself. the 3CX FQDN or static IP can easily be added to the client's SPF record. Or then still change to other methods, e.g. M365 Connector if not using IPv6.

Edit: I'm assuming sending with the client's domain here not the @FQDN

I think its preferable for customers to configure their own email sender - we will be adding sendgrid and other email options to make it easier.

The volume of email is now increasing plus the content of conversations is going via email as well in some cases (if you configure it but its a very handy feature)

If you have Google Workspace or M365 you should configure this and use the SMTP of those platforms.

Sendgrid account for each customer is easy and first 100 emails are free.

Also meeting emails need to be sent from the source, not from our SMTP mailer as they sometimes get blocked and many end up in spam.

If you are doing self hosting for customers who don't want any of the above you might have to configure your own SMTP mailer, in our view its part of hosting an instance. There are security and abuse issues for us for instances that we are not controlling.

So we are looking at it, but we have not finalized our plans yet and there will be ample time to adjust in case of any changes.

Yup totally understand. Just thinking out loud.

Side note, M365 connectors don’t work with IPv6 as there’s no way to allow IPv6, yet the host resolves, so we do have other SMTP solutions for various client workloads already. And they’re removing the other options. (edit: MS added IPv6 support so any connection that tries IPv6 will work but cannot be allowed to relay)
