Increase the Extension Length

Our system had grown past 1000 extensions and I would like to increase the extension length from 3 to 4 digits.

What happens to my original 3 digit extensions? do they stay the same, get a zero or other digit appended?

I suppose if worse comes to worse I could export my extensions prior to the extension length change, fix the extension number and reimport them.

Has anyone done this and have any helpful hints?

Changing extension length would require re-installing 3CX. Your best bet would be to export the existing extensions and add a 0 as you mentioned.

After re-installing from scratch you could then import your extensions again.

As jcostlow mentioned, a backup, install, restore is in order. Do bear in mind that if only a maximum of one IP Phone is assigned to each extension, the IP Phones will only need to reprovision to pick-up the changes and you can force this on most phones by rebooting. This provided that that they can reach the 3CX PBX on the same FQDN/IP. 3CX Clients such as the 3CX Windows App, 3CX Mobile Clients will need to reprovision using the welcome email or QR code.

Can you do a restore? My understanding was you had to reinstall from scratch, change the extension length, and them import the info you had exported and changed in the CSV file to meet new extension requirements. restore would be a lot better as we have many ring groups, and inbound rules to try and get all exported and imported correctly.

If you do a restore, it will restore the same data with the same extension length. There's no way to change the length in the backup.

Unfortunately no, you can only export/import inbound rules and extensions.

Can you do a restore?

My apologies, I see I did not word that correctly, I was referring to backing up and restoring the extensions using the export/import method.

However I also do recommend taking a full backup and moving it offsite as a precautionary measure before undertaking this task.
