Installing Debian ISO on Intel NUC

I'm hoping somebody will be able to help me. I bought a new Intel NUC (NUC5PPYH) and downloaded the 3CX ISO. I created the bootable USB with Rufus and went through what the 3CX instructions for the install. It comes up where I click INSTALL.. It starts the install but I can't past the "No common CD-ROM drive was detected". If I skip to where I can manually enter an address for the "cdrom" media, I can put in the path to the .iso (having looked at the blkid in the shell to get the right path) which in this case it is /dev/mmcblk0. I keep getting a red screen that says "Installation Step Failed". I can't get past where it is asking for a CDROM?

An interesting note - If I create the bootable USB.ISO with Rufus using DD instead of what is recommended (iso), I can get through the CDROM phase using the path as I mentioned ealier, and then actually through most of the install - but it fails when it gets to the GRUB loader??

At that point it just quits. I don't understand why this is having such a hard time?

Hello @rsullivan !

I had an issue like this months ago, check what is your BIOS version and if he accepts both Legacy and UEFI.

I was blocked because of that, a NUC not accepting Legacy anymore and ISO was stuck in Legacy. I had to Rufus it to MBR but it's kind of weird.

So I'll ask you your BIOS version and to check during the install if there is a "Force boot to UEFI" or smthg like this !

Hi Mathieu - Thanks for your reply. I upgraded the BIOS last night to the latest from the Intel site - BIOS install went fine - it's now on PYBSWCEL.86A.0077.2019.0606.1631.
I turned off UEFI and was able to use LEGACY boot. Just keeps stopping at the CDROM question.

I found a random google post that said to try and use DD in Rufus. When I did that, I was able to put in the path to the USB for the CDROM (/dev/mmcblk0) and the install started. It gets about 2/3 the way through and stops at Unable to install GRUB loader. I can skip that step, but when it finishes and boots off the hard drive, it uses LILO boot then panics and that's the end of that.

I also tried renaming the .iso to .img and used win32DiskImager to copy the .img file. It acted and loaded just like when I used DD via Rufus. But again, stopped at the GRUB loader install portion. It looked like in both of those cases, it was confusing the path of the USB with the HARD drive. Like it was trying to install the GRUB boot loader onto the USB drive rather than the hard drive.

I really didn't want to load windows on this. I wanted Linux - just seems like I can't get past this part.
Do you have any other ideas as to what it might be?

I forgot to mention. I am using an SD card instead of a USB stick. Do you think that might have something to do with it?

You really want to be asking on the Debian forums. This isn't a 3CX issue and you'll likely get a lot more exposure there as far as folks using that particular NUC and Debian.

I had some problems with grub too, check if you correctly install it in the main \sda !

But as @cobaltit said, it would be faster/more appropriate to post your struggle on a Debian forum !
