I attempted to install V16 and was nothing but a nightmare. Here is what I did

  1. Did a full backup of the PBX on to Google Drice
  2. Uninstalled 15.5 through the control panel and rebooted.
  3. Downloaded V16 from the 3CX website
  4. Ran the application EXE file and it installed C++ as well
  5. Localhost:5015 come up on my web browser and provided the file name of the backup.
  6. Started to install. And after 45 min later got Server Error with a whole bunch of stuff listed.
  7. Uninstalled V16 and rebooted
  8. Repeat install. Got server error again
  9. Uninstalled and rebokted
  10. Tried to install again but without backup and put in license key
  11. During instal said that FQDN and certificate was downloaded too many times and had to wait a week or releases and take a new FQDN
  12. Release the FQDN from the customer portal
  13. Choose a new FQDN
  14. Server error again
  15. Uninstall v16 and reboot
  16. Reinstall v15.5 with the last backup and no issues.

So I can’t understand what the issue is and why I’m having all these problems upgrading to V16. I think I followed everything correctly. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I’m installing in Windows 2012 Server R2.

Have you tried restoring the backup on a brand new Windows Server installation or a linux one, simply to see if the backup itself isn't corrupted?

No. But I can’t see how the backup would be corrupted because after all the trouble I had I reinstalled 15.5 with my backup and took 5 min and back up and running.

What I would suggest is:

  1. Install a temporary Linux 3CX v15.5 (search recents posts, there's an easy way to install an old version, just don't use the 3CX ISO)
  2. Restore your v15.5 backup there
  3. Update directly to v16 (Linux can)
  4. Backup again and try restoring on your Windows installation of 3CX v16.

Here is my issue in that.

1. I have have a Linux server or a machine running Linux.

2. I’m not saavy on Linux. I never used it and don’t know the commsnds

Installing linux is pretty straight forward, and you can run it as a VM for your current needs.

As for the 3CX installation, it is also fairly simple. There is a few commands to use but I did other posts with the command to install v15.5.

If this is really not an option, I would try installing Windows Server in a VM and test if you can install v16 and restore the backup directly. Maybe there was some Windows-esque corruption during uninstall/reinstall of your 3CX.

Well I believe I am running a VM. My 3CX is hosted remotely at OVH. And that is what I’m upgrading.

Without the errors , and any info in logs files , I would say it would be very hard to help you

I can get the errors. I took a screen shot. I’ll attach tomorrow

You can still run a small temporary VM on your own PC, doesn't to be cloud for the current need.

Have you tried to upgrade straight to v16 from the PBX admin interface?
I've done this a few times now and it works perfectly.

Btw. we are only running Linux - so not sure if this isn't possible from a Windows install.

He is running a Windows installation. He said he isn't used to Linux. Just read the thread.

Well I haven't got any experience from Windows installs with 3CX, and therefore didn't know if if was / wasn't possible to do a direct upgrade from the web admin.

Unfortunately it is not possible due to the way Windows services need to be installed/updated. It in fact requires to uninstall and reinstall to get the new versions.

Hi @Heath

Yes it would be good to show us the errors to see if we can help. Windows Server 2012 R2 SP1 is a supported version https://www.3cx.com/docs/manual/

If you are able to do so (since its an OHV VM) try setting up a fresh windows installation and try installing V16 again. We recommend this be a dedicated machine without any other 3rd party applications installed especially for production systems.
